CityJet: London City-Avignon

CityJet (WX/AF), Air France's London City-based subsidiary that seems to be throwing darts at a map of France and launching routes wherever they stick as of late, launched two routes back in May, both to the Provence-Alpes-Côte D'Azur region in South-East France. London City (LCY) to Avignon (AVN)started back on 29 May 2011, on a somewhat pokey CityJet Avro RJ85 (the ones with a cruel 6-abreast seating plan).

......7/ AF5142/ AVN1925-2020LCY

mapThe timetable may seem fairly ridiculous, but do not fear, all shall be explained. The reason is that, although during the week CityJet can occupy their aircraft with business stuff, at the weekends not only are there few business passengers, but London City Airport is actually closed Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. So CityJet had the brilliant idea of sending them off to France for the weekends, where they can operate charter routes for tour operators, such as Avignon-Figari (Corsica) as in this case. The RJ85 then trundles back up to London on a Sunday evening.
These times obviously encourage weekend breaks in Provence, and bring a bit more life to the otherwise lazy (but colourful) Avignon Airport, whose only other customer is Flybe, Jet2 having decided against returning this season.

CityJet: Pau-Dublin

Yesterday, 2 April 2011, CityJet (WX), subsidiary of Air France (AF) launched a once weekly seasonal route between Dublin (DUB) and Pau (PUF), at the foot of the Pyrenees, using an Avro RJ-85 aircraft that is based at London City Airport (LCY).

Sat: AF5178 DUB 13.15-16.40 PUF / AF5179 PUF 17.25-18.50 DUB

This route is aimed at Irish holidaymakers travelling to the south of France, to visit Pau, the surrounding landscape and the Pyrenees Mountains. Although the route faces no direct competition, Ryanair (FR) operates from Dublin to Biarritz (BIQ), close to Pau but on the Atlantic coast.

map

31.3.11

CityJet: Pau-Amsterdam

From 2 April 2011, CityJet (WX), a subsidiary of Air France (AF) will launch twice-weekly flights between Amsterdam (AMS) and Pau (PUF), in southern France, at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains. These flights will be operated by an Avro RJ-85 aircraft based at London City airport (LCY).

Sat: AF5246 AMS07:30-09:50PUF / AF5247 PUF15:40-18:00AMS
Sun: AF5248 AMS14:55-17:15PUF / AF5249 PUF17:55-20:15AMS

Rather than as a replacement for a discontinued Ryanair (FR) service, as CityJet's London City-Pau route is, this route seems to mirror an old Transavia (HV) service, operating between Rotterdam (RTM) and Pau, which was discontinued last year. Instead, Transavia now operates to nearby Biarritz (BIQ) from Rotterdam instead, leaving CityJet's new holiday route from Amsterdam uncontested.

map

28.3.11

CityJet: Pau-London City

From 2 April 2011, CityJet (WX), a subsidiary of Air France (AF), will launch a three-times weekly route between London City (LCY), an airport located in London's East end and Pau (PUF), a city in the South of France, very close to the Pyrenees Mountains. The route will be operated with an Avro RJ-85 aircraft.

Mon, Thu: AF5283 LCY09:10-12:15PUF / AF5282 PUF12:50-13:45LCY
Sat: AF5284 PUF10:25-11:30LCY / AF5285 LCY12:00-15:05PUF

The route is mostly aimed at British, and specifically London tourists, holidaying in Pau, the Pyrenees and the surrounding area. Although the route will face no direct competition, it is starting up at time of Ryanair's (FR) exit from a similar market, between London Stansted (STN) and Pau. Although not direct competition, Flybe (BE) will be starting services between Southampton (SOU), an airport easily accessible from the centre of London, and Pau almost two months later (http://aerofrench.blogspot.com/2011/01/flybe-southampton-beziers-pau-clermont.html).

map

Air France: Paris CDG-Billund

Air France (AF) has announced that from 27 March next, it will commence a 19-times weekly route between its international hub at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Billund (BLL), Denmark's second largest airport. Flights will be operated three times daily, except at weekends, when there will be two daily flights, all of which will be operated by a 50-seater Britair CRJ-200. Schedules:

Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri: AF1765 BLL0700 – 0845CDG / AF2364 CDG0935 – 1120BLL

                                              AF2365 BLL1255 – 1440CDG / AF1364 CDG1530 – 1715BLL

                                              AF1365 BLL1745 – 1930CDG / AF1764 CDG2010 – 2155BLL

Sat: AF1765 BLL0700 – 0845CDG / AF2364 CDG0935 – 1120BLL

        AF2365 BLL1255 – 1440CDG / AF1764 CDG2010 – 2155BLL

Sun: AF1765 BLL0700 – 0845CDG / AF1364 CDG1530 – 1715BLL

         AF1365 BLL1745 – 1930CDG / AF1764 CDG2010 – 2155BLL

The high frequency of these flights is to permit an increased number of connections at Paris Charles de Gaulle, to onward European and worldwide destinations. This route is in direct competition with Cimber Sterling's (QI) 13 weekly flights between the two same airports, also operated with CRJ-200 regional jets, although Cimber Sterling tends to offer lower fares and has less of a focus on connecting traffic.

map

Lun, mar, mer, jeu, ven: AF1765 BLL0700 – 0845CDG / AF2364 CDG0935 – 1120BLL

                                            AF2365 BLL1255 – 1440CDG / AF1364 CDG1530 – 1715BLL

                                            AF1365 BLL1745 – 1930CDG / AF1764 CDG2010 – 2155BLL

Sam: AF1765 BLL0700 – 0845CDG / AF2364 CDG0935 – 1120BLL

           AF2365 BLL1255 – 1440CDG / AF1764 CDG2010 – 2155BLL

Dim: AF1765 BLL0700 – 0845CDG / AF1364 CDG1530 – 1715BLL

          AF1365 BLL1745 – 1930CDG / AF1764 CDG2010 – 2155BLL

Air France TLS-DUS, TLS-HAM

Air France (AF), France’s national airline, recently announced plans to start two new routes from the southern French city of Toulouse (TLS). Currently, the airline only operates two international routes from Toulouse to Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Milan Malpensa (MXP), the rest being domestic. However, from 1 Nov. ’10 it will be offering six weekly flights to Hamburg (HAM) in northern Germany, to be operated 6 times weekly by its subsidiary BritAir (DB) with 70-seat CRJ700 regional aircraft. From the same date, Air France will commence a daily operation to Düsseldorf (DUS) in eastern Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr Region, flown by their subsidiary Régional (YS) with 50-seater Embraer 145 regional aircraft.
   The schedule is as follows:

Hamburg:

Mon-Fri: AF5999 TLS 08.15-10.30 HAM
                AF5998 HAM 17.40-19.55 TLS

Sun: AF5999 TLS 14.45-17.00 HAM
        AF5998 HAM 17.40-19.55 TLS

Düsseldorf:

Mon-Sun: AF3252 TLS 1450-1650 DUS
                 AF3253 DUS 17.20-19.10 TLS

Air France will have no competition on the Düsseldorf route, it is likely to attract a majority of passengers travelling on business; it is therefore served with smaller aircraft. The Hamburg route, however, faces competition from Lufthansa’s (LH) low cost subsidiary Germanwings (4U), who use 150-seat A319’s 4 times weekly on the route. This is an important route as it connects two of the aircraft manufacturer Airbus’ production sites.
 map

Hambourg:

Lun-ven: AF5999 TLS 08.15-10.30 HAM
                AF5998 HAM 17.40-19.55 TLS

Dim: AF5999 TLS 14.45-17.00 HAM
        AF5998 HAM 17.40-19.55 TLS

Düsseldorf:

Lun-dim: AF3252 TLS 1450-1650 DUS
                AF3253 DUS 17.20-19.10 TLS
