Ryanair: Bordeaux – Rome Ciampino

Bordeaux (BOD) to Rome Ciampino (CIA) is a new route offered by Ryanair (FR) since 30 October 2011, to be operated with the company's 189-seater Boeing 737-800 aircraft on a four-times-weekly basis.
Ryanair already operate a small number of routes from Bordeaux Airport's low-cost terminal 'Billi' and Rome Ciampino will be the sixth destination Ryanair serves from the airport, the second destination in Italy after Bologna.
The flights could potentially be of use to business travellers, however on the whole the route will likely attract leisure passengers in much higher numbers. The schedule enables a variety of trip lengths.

Ryanair's main competition on the route will be Air France's route to Rome Fiumicino, with daily flights operated by Regional. easyJet also operate flights to Milan Malpensa from Bordeaux.

Vueling: Nantes - Venice

Nantes (NTE) to Venice (VCE) is a route to be launched by Vueling (VY), announced as part of Vueling's huge route expansion into France. The Spanish low-cost carrier aims to operate this service three times weekly with 180-seater Airbus A320 aircraft from 27 March 2012.
Vueling currently operates to Barcelona from Nantes, but it plans to open 3 new routes from Nantes next March. The route to Venice, perhaps the most questionable of the three in terms of viability, is not operated regularly by any other airline at the moment, although XL Airways France occasionally operates charter flights on the route. It will be presumably be aimed at the leisure market, as the timetable is somewhat incompatible with business schedules. That is not to say that business passengers will be deterred if the flights are convenient.

Venice currently has flights to many of the major French cities, with Paris, Lyon (both by Air France and easyJet), Marseille (by Air Corsica), Nice (by Darwin Airlines) and Toulouse (by Vueling) also being served. However, from Nantes, the only Italian destination served is Milan Malpensa, by Régional.

Ryanair: Marseille – Milan Bergamo

Marseille (MRS) to Milan Bergamo (BGY) is a new route that was launched by Ryanair (FR) on 30 October 2011. It is flown 10 times weekly (very frequently for a Ryanair route, especially a new one) with the standard 189-seater Ryanair Boeing 737-800 equipment. Bergamo airport is situated about an hour's drive outside of Milan.

The route links the second-largest cities of France and Italy, separated by 400km (250mi) of quite mountainous terrain. The trip can take up to five and a half hours by car. The route has a decent leisure and business potential, and the schedules take full advantage of this. Unusually well-timed for Ryanair flights, the scheduling permits day returns on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and a choice of flights which would be handy for weekend breaks.

Historically, the route has not seen a great deal of traffic. The route to Milan Malpensa (MXP), Milan's main airport has been continuously served for almost a decade by the almost-completely-unheard-of airline Twinjet (T7), which despite its name operates only tiny 19-seater Beech 1900D aircraft on a variety of marginal French routes. It has 9 flights a week (double-daily Monday to Thursday, one on Friday) but the pricing makes the flights only really suitable to business travellers.
A couple of years ago, Baboo (F7) started flights on the same route, with a double daily frequency on a triangle route from Geneva (GVA-MRS-MXP-GVA in the mornings, the opposite direction in the evenings)with considerably larger 74-seater Dash 8-Q400 aircraft. However, the route did not last more than a couple of seasons.
Now, Ryanair will also face competition from the recently launched Air France flights, which also operate directly into Malpensa airport. Originally scheduled to be operated with mainline Air France aircraft (therefore much larger aircraft), for an undisclosed reason (probably lack of demand because of Ryanair competition) the flights have been downgraded to the much smaller 46-seater ATR 42 aircraft of Airlinair, which link the two cities twelve times a week.

Swiss: Geneva-Nice

Geneva (GVA) to Nice (NCE) by Swiss (LX) is a new route that the Swiss national airline will be launching on 10 February 2012 to be operated with 136-seater Airbus A320 aircraft. This new twice-daily route will mark the company's tenth based aircraft at Geneva, which will enable increases in frequency of flights to other destinations from Geneva, such as Madrid and Moscow Domodedovo.
mapDespite the fact that the two cities are only 300km (185 mi) apart, poor land connections due to the Alps as a physical barrier mean that passenger numbers on this route are quite high (311,940 passengers in 2010(1)), so the Swiss flights should be able to find their niche. No other legacy carrier serves this route, however, easyJet Switzerland (DS) flies up to three times daily in the winter and up to four times daily in the summer, and Darwin (F7), formerly Baboo, flies two-to-four times weekly year-round, but with smaller aircraft. Swiss' intervention on this route may well put Darwin, the smaller, less well-known airline, at a disadvantage and leave it with no choice but to abandon the route, as has previously happened in similar circumstances with destinations such as Prague and Athens when they were operated by Baboo.

1234567/ LX528/ GVA17.35-18.35NCE/ LX529/ NCE19.15-20.15GVA

The Geneva-Nice route sees a fairly large amount of both business and leisure passengers overall, with a slight penchant towards leisure for the summer months. Nice will also be Swiss' first French destination from its Geneva base; due to the configuration of Geneva Airport, flights to France depart from a separate area.

Manchester (MAN) to Béziers (BZR) is one of the routes that Ryanair (FR) is launching as part of its new base in Manchester. From 26 March 2012, Ryanair will fly the route twice weekly with its standard 189-seater Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Ryanair will be launching a host of similar French routes from Manchester next March, and these will be covered in later posts. The route to Béziers, located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of Sothern France was a fairly predictable ‘sun’ route, and will be undoubtedly popular with holidaymakers and second-home owners heading to southern France; the route will most likely only be available for the summer season (until October 2012). The timings are ideal for weekend breaks.

Skyways: Berlin TXL-Geneva

Berlin Tegel (TXL) to Geneva (GVA), a route to be opened by Skyways (JZ) of Sweden, is a curious one. Back in Spring 2011, the small Swedish regional carrier that hadn't ventured much outside its country's borders did something very strange by announcing a route between Geneva and Jönköping (JKG). The airline even sent out a press release concerning it, in Swedish, justifying the completely barmy route between Geneva, the midsize Swiss city on the shores of Lake Leman, and Jönköping, a comparatively small Southern Swedish town, with a small airport handling an even smaller number of international flights. At the time, this seemed all the more ridiculous because Geneva didn't (and still doesn't) have links to Gothenburg, a much larger centre of population in Southern Sweden.

The service was later rectified to operate via Berlin Tegel, scheduled to be operated from the 20th of June 2011 with 50-seater Embraer E-145 aircraft. The aircraft choice in itself was surprising, because Skyways didn't own any of that aircraft at the time. However, that wasn't the only problem. The launch date was pushed back, and the schedule changed entirely so that the route did not even start in Jönköping, but relied on a based aircraft in Berlin.

The route launch was pushed back on several occasions, rolling the start date back through July, then September and October before finally ending up on 25th March 2012. During this time, although the flights were bookable on each date, the schedule that could be found on Skyways' website was not the one that could be found on many of the other websites. Some suggested that the route would be operated with the aircraft based in Geneva. Some alternatively had different timings for the flights. These were even available right up until 2 weeks before the intended October start date, the deadline at which an airline cannot cancel its flights without having to rebook passengers. Altogether, the Skyways booking experience has not been a particularly reliable one. Without intending to redeem it, the company has faced several upheavals as of late, being bought out by an Ukrainian oligarch who then integrated the Gothenburg-based City Airline (no, they didn't fly to Geneva either, but they did fly to Lyon) into the comparatively-sized Skyways.

At present, Skyways plans to operate its Berlin-Geneva flights with 50-seater CRJ-200 aircraft from Cimber Air, another small Scandinavian carrier, from the 25th of March 2011. The route hasn't been operated in the past decade; Berlin-Geneva has only been going since easyJet (U2/DS) launched a Geneva-Berlin Schönefeld (SXF) route back in November 2004. The Skyways flight, which will be operated 10 times weekly, is suited to the business traveller, although timings are also appropriate for weekend breaks and Berlin-Geneva is fairly popular with tourists as well as business travellers.

These flights are operated as a joint venture with airBaltic (BT) and as such carry the BT code. Significantly, airBaltic no longer serves Geneva as of summer 2011.
In spite of Skyways' well-earned reputation for delaying flight launches, it remains to be seen if this route actually gets underway before Berlin Tegel airport closes altogether on 3 June 2012, when all operations will move to Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

CityJet: London City-Avignon

CityJet (WX/AF), Air France's London City-based subsidiary that seems to be throwing darts at a map of France and launching routes wherever they stick as of late, launched two routes back in May, both to the Provence-Alpes-Côte D'Azur region in South-East France. London City (LCY) to Avignon (AVN)started back on 29 May 2011, on a somewhat pokey CityJet Avro RJ85 (the ones with a cruel 6-abreast seating plan).

....5../ AF5143/ LCY1655-1950AVN
......7/ AF5142/ AVN1925-2020LCY

mapThe timetable may seem fairly ridiculous, but do not fear, all shall be explained. The reason is that, although during the week CityJet can occupy their aircraft with business stuff, at the weekends not only are there few business passengers, but London City Airport is actually closed Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. So CityJet had the brilliant idea of sending them off to France for the weekends, where they can operate charter routes for tour operators, such as Avignon-Figari (Corsica) as in this case. The RJ85 then trundles back up to London on a Sunday evening.
These times obviously encourage weekend breaks in Provence, and bring a bit more life to the otherwise lazy (but colourful) Avignon Airport, whose only other customer is Flybe, Jet2 having decided against returning this season.

Toulouse (TLS) to Malaga (AGP), Vueling's (VY) final route from its recently opened Toulouse base, debuted on 23 April 2011 and is flown twice a week. The 920km route is flown with Airbus 319 aircraft. This route, owing in part to low frequency, should attract mainly tourist traffic to Southern Spain.
Due to the recent terrible weather in most of France over July, these flights could well prove quite popular over the weeks to come. Notably, of the eight routes Vueling launched from Toulouse, five of which were to Spain, only two faced competition. This route to Malaga has a single weekly flight from Europe Airpost (5O) as competition, which to be frank isn't much.

Lyon (LYS) to Yerevan (EVN) is the new route on offer from Armavia (U8), the national airline of the Near Eastern state of Armenia. Since 15 May 2011, the 3300km route has been operated every Sunday with an Airbus A319 aircraft, and will continue to be until the end of October.
With a very low frequency of just one flight per week, the route is probably aimed at diaspora traffic between France's second city and the capital of Armenia, as well as tourism and to a limited extent, business traffic. As unlikely as traffic between France and Armenia might seem, this is Armavia's third route to France after Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Marseille Provence (MRS). In addition, Air France also flies to Yerevan from its base at Paris CDG.

Judging from the scheduling of the route, which lasts until the end of the Summer Schedule in October, and the flight prices viewable on www.ryanair.com, this route is geared towards the Paris-originating leisure market, although the route does seem to be stimulating a small amount of traffic from the Calabria end.

Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun: FR3116 BVA17.35-19.05BZR / FR3117 BZR19.30-21.00BVA

The route is mainly aimed at Parisian tourists heading to the South of France on holiday, but it will also be useful for families visiting relatives, and to a certain extent business travellers. The route faces no direct competition as no other carrier flies from a Paris airport to Bémapziers; however, Air France (AF) does fly from nearby Montpellier (MPL) to both Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Paris Orly (ORY).

Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun: FR3116 BVA17.35-19.05BZR / FR3117 BZR19.30-21.00BVA

The airline will use a Chalair (CE) (a smaller French regional airline) 19-seater Beech 1900D aircraft on the route which will operate twice daily on weekdays and once on Sundays.

The route is essentially targeting business travellers on this short intercity route, and faces no direct competition; indirect competition is irrelevant due the route's length: at only 243mi/ 391km it is so short that routes to Paris from alternate nearby airports are not real competition; however, the TGV high speed trains link La Rochelle to Paris in just over three hours.

CityJet: Pau-Dublin

Yesterday, 2 April 2011, CityJet (WX), subsidiary of Air France (AF) launched a once weekly seasonal route between Dublin (DUB) and Pau (PUF), at the foot of the Pyrenees, using an Avro RJ-85 aircraft that is based at London City Airport (LCY).

Sat: AF5178 DUB 13.15-16.40 PUF / AF5179 PUF 17.25-18.50 DUB

This route is aimed at Irish holidaymakers travelling to the south of France, to visit Pau, the surrounding landscape and the Pyrenees Mountains. Although the route faces no direct competition, Ryanair (FR) operates from Dublin to Biarritz (BIQ), close to Pau but on the Atlantic coast.

CityJet: Pau-Amsterdam

From 2 April 2011, CityJet (WX), a subsidiary of Air France (AF) will launch twice-weekly flights between Amsterdam (AMS) and Pau (PUF), in southern France, at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains. These flights will be operated by an Avro RJ-85 aircraft based at London City airport (LCY).

Sun: AF5248 AMS14:55-17:15PUF / AF5249 PUF17:55-20:15AMS

Rather than as a replacement for a discontinued Ryanair (FR) service, as CityJet's London City-Pau route is, this route seems to mirror an old Transavia (HV) service, operating between Rotterdam (RTM) and Pau, which was discontinued last year. Instead, Transavia now operates to nearby Biarritz (BIQ) from Rotterdam instead, leaving CityJet's new holiday route from Amsterdam uncontested.
