easyJet: Geneva-Leeds Bradford

   Much to my surprise, easyJet (U2) recently announced a new route linking Geneva, CH (GVA) and Leeds Bradford, GB (LBA) to be flown from the 17^th of December until mid-April to coincide with the duration of the ski season in the mountains around Geneva. This was somewhat unexpected, given that easyJet has operated no flights to Leeds Bradford in the past and that they will face direct competition on the route. The route will be flown daily except Tuesday and Wednesday (5 times per week) with easyJet's 156-seater A319 aircraft.       The schedules read as follows:

   The five weekly frequencies indicate that easyJet trusts that the route will sell very well, as this will double the capacity on this particular route. The 'capacity' already present on flights linking the Yorkshire airport with Geneva is down to Jet2.com (LS), another low-cost airline, who were planning to operate 5 weekly flights to Geneva this Winter, of which four would be with 148-seater Boeing 737-300 aircraft, leaving the Saturday flight to be operated by the much larger 229-seater Boeing 757-200 aircraft. Jet2.com have been operating to Geneva airport from Leeds Bradford for 6 years now, and this Winter will be the first that they will face competition. Leeds Bradford Airport is Jet2.com's largest base and it has been recently subject to an onslaught by Ryanair (FR), who launched a base at LBA earlier this year and compete with Jet2 on a number of routes, of which Geneva is not one of them. Suffice to say, Jet2 was probably a bit edgy this Autumn. In response to easyJet's route announcement, they added a second daily flight on Saturdays and Sundays on the route to be operated by their Boeing 737-300's and are offering free Ski &Snowboard transport on the route, in order to attract more passengers to their flights.
   Another interesting fact about the route is that it is one of the very few to be operated both by easyJet and its Swiss franchise, easyJet Switzerland (DS). The Monday, Thursday and Friday flights will be operated by a Liverpool (LPL)-based easyJet aircraft that operates LPL-GVA-LBA-GVA-LPL, whereas the weekend flights will be operated by a Geneva-based easyJet Switzerland aircraft on a simpler GVA-LBA-GVA rotation.
   The weekly one-way seats in February 2010 numbered 821 last year, but in February 2011 there will be 1897 seats on the route waiting to be filled, a 131% increase.
  
   Une nouvelle qui m'a beaucoup surprise est l'information qu'easyJet (U2) ouvrira le 17 décembre prochain une liaison saisonnière entre Genève, CH (GVA) et Leeds Bradford, GB (LBA), qui sera effectué pendant toute la saison de ski, jusqu'à fin avril 2011. Cette annonce était surprenante surtout dû aux faits d'une part que c'est la première fois qu'easyJet s'envole vers Leeds Bradford, d'autre part qu'une autre compagnie low-cost effectue déjà la liaison. EasyJet opérera ses vols les lundis, jeudis, vendredis, samedis et dimanches en Airbus A319 de 156 places avec les horaires suivants :

   Qu'easyJet inaugurera la liaison avec cinq vols hebdomadaires est encourageant ; cela indique que la compagnie anticipe que les sièges se vendront assez vite, même si, suite à l'annonce d'easyJet, la capacité sur la liaison aura doublé d'ici février. La 'capacité' déjà présente est celle de Jet2.com (LS), autre compagnie à bas coûts qui envisageait opérer 5 vols par semaine entre l'aéroport du Yorkshire et Genève, dont quatre aurait été en Boeing 737-300 de 148 places, le vol du samedi aurait été opéré en Boeing 757-200 de 229 places. Jet2 fréquente la plateforme genevoise depuis 6 ans, mais cela sera la première fois qu'elle rencontre un concurrent sur cette liaison en particulier. Leeds Bradford est la base d'avions la plus importante de Jet2.com et celle-ci a été récemment attaquée par Ryanair (FR), la compagnie à bas coûts la plus grande et la plus menaçante d'Europe, qui fait concurrent à Jet2 sur certaines liaisons déjà bien établies, Genève n'étant pas parmi ceux-ci. Il suffit de dire que Jet2.com est assez frustré cet automne. Jet2.com a répondu très clairement à l'annonce d'easyJet en mettant en place deux vols supplémentaires par semaine pendant la période de forte affluence, entre mi-février et fin mars : les samedis et les dimanches de cette période, Jet2 effectuera deux vols par jour au lieu d'un seul ; en plus, la compagnie offrira pour ces vols la portée gratuite de skis et de snowboards afin d'attirer plus de passagers, ce qu'easyJet n'a pas cherché à imiter.
   Un autre détail intéressant est le fait que le vol sera un des rares à être opéré conjointement par easyJet et sa filiale suisse easyJet Switzerland (DS). Les lundis, jeudis et vendredis, le vol sera entretenu par un appareil basé à Liverpool (LPL) qui effectue LPL-GVA-LBA-GVA-LPL, tandis que le vol sera opéré par un appareil basé à Genève le samedi et le dimanche.
   Les places hebdomadaires dans une direction pour cette route en février 2010 étaient au nombre de 821, tandis qu'il y aura 1897 places à remplir chaque semaine de l'an prochain.
